Local tips for kayaking in Karlstad

• If you rent for 2 hours, you can paddle up the river, take a break on the beach just north of the ice hockey arena “Löfbergs Arena” and paddle back downstream.
• If you rent for 4 hours, you can paddle around the whole town and enjoy downstream almost all the way. Head towards the hospital, paddle around the golf course and the yacht club. When you get to the inner harbour (Inre hamn), you head into the canal (Pråmkanalen) and use the locks. Then you have just a short stretch upstream before you turn left at Sandgrundsudden and can enjoy downstream paddling again back to Teaterparken. The locks are open July and August. You might need to wait a while at the locks since their schedule is adapted to the Boat Buses’ time table.
• When the locks are closed, you can carry the kayak past it or choose to go further east and paddle upstream on that part of the river. Depending on if you are an experienced paddler or not, you might need another hour if you go that way.
• If you decide to paddle down the river on the way out, you must be aware that it is upstream on the way back. You should allow 40-50% more time for the trip back.

Good to know at KAYAKOMAT Karlstad

• If you paddle around the town, you can stop for something to eat and drink at Café Slussvakten (closed on Mondays, open 11-21 all other days) near the locks.
• Parking is limited at KAYAKOMAT Teaterparken. You can, however, park in the garage under the shopping mall Mitt i City and then walk across the bridge.
• We don't use spray decks for paddling on the river.
