Self Service Kayak and SUP rental at KAYAKOMAT Ornbau/Altmühl-Zuleiter
Rent SUPs and kayaks in Ornbau (Gern district) in the beautiful Franconian Lake District. Explore Lake Altmühl, surrounded by lush greenery and home to the 110-hectare nature reserve “Bird Island” (“Vogelinsel im Altmühlsee”). Perfect for beginners and experienced paddlers alike, enjoy kayaking or SUP paddling with friends or family. Start near the shore or embark on a 6 km journey from Ornbau along the Altmühl feeder to the lake. With KAYAKOMAT’s self-service rental, you can conveniently access equipment anytime. Discover Ornbau, the smallest town in Middle Franconia, and see Lake Altmühl from a fresh perspective!
Local tips for paddling
- Biergarten an der Insel Gern A beautifully situated beer garden right on the shore. Refresh yourself before paddling or toast to your successful excursion afterwards
- Restaurant and Beer garden "Haus am See": Live events for music lovers.
- Bird Island: Circular trail through the nature reserve with observation tower. Natural history tours to the bird island from mid-March to mid-October
- Adventure playground "Romans and Alemanni": Adventure playground on an area of approx. 1.2 hectares. Not far from the site (approx. 500m) runs the Roman Limes (UNESCO World Heritage)

- Around 60 fee-required parking spaces, an e-charging station and public toilets available
- Our KAYAKOMAT is only about 30m away from the entry point, start via a wooden walkway (walk around the beer garden on the left) or the beach shore

On the day of your booking, you will receive a code via email and SMS. Arrive at your KAYAKOMAT and unlock your gear. Inside you’ll find everything you need: PFD, paddles and sprayskirts. If it’s your first time out on the water, make sure you double check our safety tips.
Time to paddle!
Now you’re ready to go! Enjoy your time out on the water, and be sure to tag us @kayakomat on social media. When your rental time is finished, return your equipment, check that everything is clean and lock it back up.
